Biblical Counseling

The Personal Ministry of God's Word

Biblical Counseling in Our Local Church

We call the counseling offered at UBC "biblical counseling," which is a way of labeling the personal ministry of God's Word, applied in times of trouble. It is speaking the truth in love (Eph 4:15) and caring for suffering people in a Christ-centered way. It applies the implications of the gospel to daily life.

There can often be a stigma to seeking counseling, especially for Christians. But we all need help. The church is a hospital of redeemed people under the care of the Great Physician. Please don’t let fear prevent you from seeking the help that is best for your soul.

The Elements of Biblical Counseling

Members of the counseling team pray to encourage your faith in Christ and help you walk by faith in Christ. “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation” (Heb 11:1-2). Faith in God is meant to be fed, nurtured, protected, and strengthened. The apostle Paul longed to visit the Romans in order “that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine” (Rom 1:12). Encouraging faith is a critical aspect of biblical counseling.

In Jesus Christ, we have a great High Priest who has suffered and been tempted in all things, yet He never sinned. Because of Christ, even though you may be facing every sin common to man, you can have victory. God has promised that He will not let you be tempted beyond what your capacity to endure with His grace. He will provide a way out (1 Cor 10:13; Heb 4:14-16). Faithful ministry of the word in times of trouble gives hope, “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope” (Rom 15:4).

The aim of counseling ministry "is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith” (1 Tim 1:5). The members of the counseling team want to help you know God’s love for you in Christ. They want to help you love God and others more deeply, faithfully, and joyfully. Because only in the actual practice of the Scriptures shall we be blessed in what we do, and only then will we please the Lord (James 1:22-25; Prov 28:13). Biblical counseling can be a regular source of encouragement to apply the Word of God to daily life.

In Christ, we can be sanctified through suffering. In Christ, we grow. In Christ, we can learn how to lay aside the old selfish ways of living and put on the new ways of living in a manner worthy of the Lord Jesus Christ. We can learn to please God in every area of our lives. We can learn to live a godly life and to live in such a way that we will be increasing in our knowledge of God and our ability to relate to others. Biblical counseling will enable you to make practical changes (Eph 4:20-24; Col 1:10).
