Our Pastor

lumpkin-familyjpg.jpgMike Lumpkin is the Senior Pastor of University Baptist Church. He has been married to his wonderful wife, Jan, for 14 years. They have three children: Anna (7), Elizabeth (4) and Lydia (newborn). They are native Texans.

Mike has degrees from Baylor University (BBA), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (MDiv) and is pursuing a degree from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (DMin). Mike is passionate about preaching and leading the visible church to be as consistent with God’s “invisible” church (only He knows who are all His) as possible by lining up with the New Testament church.

His interests include church history (especially the puritans - Owens, Baxter, Edwards…), running, motorcycles and mostly time with his family.

“I believe I have been sovereignly saved by God in Christ Jesus, and that work, I believe, began when I was about 9 years old. For various reasons I have had questions about my salvation, primarily due to the fact that my view of salvation radically changed as I got older. I ceased to put assurance “stock” in the means of my conversion (aisle walking / prayer praying) and had to put my stock in the only “place” that mattered…God’s sovereign grace.

With this change came a new understanding of the fruit of genuine conversion. So, what doubts I’ve had since then have been mainly due to times I just simply have failed Him and sinned. As I grow the gospel is deepening its roots in my life and I know that the only good in me is Christ and that even when I fail, He is able and will finish the work that He began. That is His commitment to His covenant in His name with me through Christ! That is assurance and with that we can have proper confidence…in the God of our salvation, not our “acceptance” of Him. Ephesians 1, Romans 8 and 2 Peter 1 are chapters that have taken particular meaning in my life in living out / working out the salvation given me by a Triune God.”
